Most people don’t struggle with emotions because they feel too much—
they struggle because they’ve never been given a clear way to understand what they feel.
We’re building a Glyph Library—
a visual and emotional system that maps human feelings across two core states:
- Defense Mode (when our nervous system feels unsafe)
- Belonging Mode (when we feel connected, grounded, and safe)
Each glyph represents a specific emotional state or behavior.
But not just what it looks like on the surface—
we go deeper:
- What it feels like in the body
- Why it’s happening
- Where it comes from
- What mode it’s being processed from
- And how to shift, if it’s safe to do so
Because sadness in Belonging Mode feels like soft grief.
And sadness in Defense Mode might be shame, silence, or collapse.
Same with anger.
Same with joy.
Same with guilt, pride, hope, care, and even numbness.
This isn’t about labeling feelings as good or bad.
It’s about helping people recognize their state—
so they can navigate emotions with more clarity, compassion, and power.
We’re designing this system to be:
- Neurodivergent-friendly
- Trauma-aware
- Visually intuitive
- And grounded in real emotional experience
Simple as a glyph.
Precise as a nervous system truth.
Human, all the way through.
Let’s begin.
We’ll start with 8 core glyphs inside Defense Mode—
states we enter when our nervous system doesn’t feel safe.
Each one will include:
- Name
- Short emotional description
- Body / nervous system cues
- Why this shows up
- Misinterpretations (how others usually see it)
- Visual glyph idea

Together with the Defense set, we now have 16 glyphs—enough to form the foundation of a living emotional system.
Next steps could include:
- Sketching the gradient layout
- Adding user guidance text (e.g., “how to use these glyphs”)
- Creating interaction examples for future app/tool use
